On Friday, April 14th, 2005, the Thomas Edison High School Indoor Drumline, after competing in both the preliminary and semi-finals World Guard International (WGI) Indoor Drumline National Championship Competition in Dayton, Ohio, finished their season as the 14th place National Scholastic Percussion 'A' Drumline. This is a truly remarkable achievement when you consider that there were over 120 Scholastic Percussion 'A' Drumlines accross the nation competing this season for the chance to be number one. This marks Edison's second year of participation in this winter indoor musical sport. Making this accomplishment even more impressive is the fact that 11 of Edison's 23 Indoor Drumline students do not normally play a percussion instrumen, and that 8 of the total 23 began this year's season with absolutely no drumline experience whatsoever. It was with these challenges that the Edison Indoor Drumline staff began the season of instruction and practice.
This year, Edison's Indoor Drumline performance was titled "Separation Anxiety." The performance itself was composed and choreographed by Edison's Indoor Drumline Staff, Mr. John Tarzca and Mr. Chris Martin, who, under the direction of Mr. Erik Richards, the Edison Director of Bands, also provided the superb instruction, guidance, and mentoring for the 23 students, 12 of which were in the Battery and 11 in the Pit , who made up this season's Edison Indoor Drumline. The "Separation Anxiety" theme portrayed the realities involved with a break up in a close personal relationship that starts off joyful, but ends in separation and lonliness. Through the music and theatrics, Edison's performance took the spectator and judge through an initial state of mutual happiness and bliss that rapidly dissolves into apprehension and the creation of barriers and leads to a state of hatred and isolation. Needless to say, the execution of this performance took many hours of practice, which began in December 2004 on a twice a weekly basis.
The dividends of these many practice sessions paved the road to Edison's advancement to the National Championship Competition and began paying out immediately as Edison entered into competitions. The first of these being the Atlantic Indoor Assiociation (AIA) tournament at Herndon High School on February 19, 2005 where Edison took 1st Place with a score of 78.6. Three weeks later, in Roebuck, South Carolina at the WGI Regional Competion, Edison, Competiting against nine other Scholastic Percussion 'A' Drumlines, again took the 1st Place trophy with a score of 84.3. On March 19, 2005, at the Edison High School AIA Invitational Competition, Edison 's Drumline scored a 90.4 and took top honors. The final competition, prior to competing at the National Championship, was the AIA Finals at Powhatan High School in Powhatan, Virginia on the weekend of 2-3 April 2005. This competition consisted of a preliminary and a finals competition that when all was said and done, Edison had not only advanced to the finals following the preliminaries, but also scored the highest of any competitor in the Finals competition recieving a score of 91.5 and winning first place for the fourth consecutive time. With this under their belt, the final step for these 23 outstanding Drumline students was to compete in the National Championship Competition.
The WGI National Championships Competition in Dayton, Ohio is the premier, and toughest, Drumline competition of the season. The Thomas Edison Indoor Drumline not only advanced to this preeminent event, but also showed themselves, by earning the 14th place position, as one of the top national competitors.
